Changes in Regulations…

The Days of Long Cords are Over!

“Over the last three decades, Health Canada—a world leader in consumer product safety— has worked to reduce the risks posed by corded window coverings. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the number of children dying from this preventable risk has remained too high at an average of one Canadian child per year” (Health Canada, 2019).

To help eliminate this hazard, Health Canada has published the new Corded Window Coverings Regulations (CWCR) to restrict the length of cords and the size of loops allowed on window coverings sold in Canada. With the new regulations scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2022, traditional cord locks will no longer be available for purchase.

What does this mean for consumers?

  • Exciting new technologies for both new and existing window coverings

  • Many style options for safe, cordless blinds and drapes

  • The opportunity to create innovative spaces using new and upcoming technologies (including motorized treatments)

  • The ability to improve our health and well-being through the control of natural light.

Motorized Window Treatments

  • A few manufacturers, such as Somfy, Lutron and Hunter Douglas, have developed exciting new motorized systems. Controlled by remote, wireless wall switch, or even from cellphone devices using a special app, motorized window coverings not only offer convenience but have shown to be a very safe option for small children and pets.

Motorizing Existing Shades

  • There is the possibility to have your existing shades retrofitted. If this interests you, please don’t hesitate to contact Sonata Design for a FREE consultation!

  • Hand-operatedManufacturers have developed a variety of innovative cordless products. Hunter Douglas is a leader in cordless technology and offers hand-operated and wand products. Their LiteRise and SimpleLift hand-operated systems eliminate cords and offer a simple blind or drape operation product. The operator simply raises or lowers the blinds using a locking mechanism on the bottom of the product.

  • Wand-operated:  Wand-operated blinds and drapes allow you to open, close, raise, and lift the window covering using a single wand. This not only eliminates dangerous cords but makes blind and drape control a breeze.

The Future is Cordless

As Canada phases out window coverings with long, dangerous cords, there are lots of new and exciting products to look forward to! Whether it’s the sleek convenience of a motorized product or the economical hand-operated option, consumers will have endless options for purchasing safe blinds and drapes.
