What Is Upholstery?

Upholstery refers to the components that make up furniture, such as cushions, seats, padding, covers, springs, webbing, etc. Upholstery comes in different fabrics, designs, and colours. It’s also one of the most affordable things to focus on for home décor if you want to elevate a room. We can assist with custom and off-the-rack upholstery.

Why Customize Your Upholstery?

Custom upholstery isn’t just luxury, but often a necessity in interior design. Like many, you probably want an interior that’s true to your lifestyle. And upholstery is an essential aspect of creating bespoke and timeless interiors. Many of our clients typically insist on having custom-built, quality upholstery for reasons revolving around internal components, performance, and comfort. We can help you navigate the complexities of choosing custom upholstery for any space.

Custom Fabric Offers Higher Quality Performance

The more time we spend at our homes or commercial spaces, the more often furniture is used. Plus, we usually require our furniture to serve multiple purposes. For example, dining rooms have become extra office spaces in many homes. However, areas that serve numerous purposes increase wear and tear on furnishings. So in such situations, high-performance fabrics are non-negotiable. Custom fabric that’s pilling and moisture resistant, and you can easily spot clean – will always make your furniture look fresh longer. The peace of mind knowing you can enjoy your furnishings and entertain guests without worrying about wear and tear is priceless.

Design Something for You

Make any furnishing look as desired. Custom upholstery plays a significant role in ensuring everything is tailored to the occupant's needs. After all, respectable interior designers know the best possible designs are bespoke to the client. For example, we often create custom upholstery when our clients can't acquire the design style they want from a vendor. The ultimate goal is to craft a design that's unique to you or your client’s taste. And custom upholstery makes that easier because it exponentially increases your options.

Take Control of Your Creativity

Find top-grade custom upholstery for any interior design need. From our years of experience, while off-the-rack or upholstery store items may seem enticing, there’s much more to consider when choosing upholstery. Custom upholstery provides complete control of how you want your furniture to look and feel.

Why Re-upholster Existing Furniture?

Hang on to high-quality furnishings for as long as possible. Our clients typically choose to reupholster because they can't find quality pieces or the furniture they want in the desired style. Additionally, most high-quality furniture is worth reupholstering because many of today’s items have shorter lifespans. The key is knowing what to reupholster.

Even though reupholstering is environmentally friendly and great for renewing old furnishings, it’s not always cost-effective. For example, a chair with a solid frame and made of genuine hardwood is worth saving. In contrast, a low-quality chair with engineered wood is likely not. We’ll help you consider all the elements involved, including investment, features, and in general, whether reupholstering is worth doing.

  • Preserve Durable Furnishings

Assembly line or stock upholstery is very different from custom. The upholstery you typically find in stock at local stores is often of lower grade, meaning the furniture will deteriorate sooner. Reupholstering can bring new life to antiques or old but well-made furniture. That's why many reupholster, even when it would be more affordable to buy a new piece. The care or detail that goes into custom upholstery is also unmatched. As a result, furniture often lasts years, if not generations, without needing repairs.

  • Reupholstering Is Sustainable and Ethical

Reupholstering is a sustainable and ethical option. You can often reupholster heirlooms or recover vintage pieces with less environmental impact. In other words, choosing to reupholster eliminates a significant amount of carbon footprint—for example, no need to use any more lumber or ship furnishings to the consumer.

Narrowing In on The Perfect Upholstery Fabric

The first thing to consider is the way you or your client intends to use the space. Once you truly understand the role a room plays in the occupant’s life and those that will use it, selecting upholstery fabric gets easier.

Key considerations include:

  • How much traffic do you expect the room to have daily? Will the furniture get a ton of use? Understanding and considering how your fabric might age with use is essential.

  • Are there kids in the environment? How old are the children? In such situations, ease of cleaning is likely crucial.

  • Does the occupant have pets? Do pets sit on the furniture? Occupants with pets should carefully consider durability.

  • How much sun does the room receive? Fabric tends to fade after prolonged exposure to sunlight. So UV-resistant upholstery is ideal if a room gets lots of natural light.

  • What is the colour of the walls? What’s the furniture style? The colour plus pattern of your fabric should go well with the walls and furniture style.

You’re Just One Click Away

At Sonata Design, we believe it's essential to make decisions led by intentional reasoning. Decisions beyond surface-level rationale are not rooted in impulses, but purpose and the occupant’s preferences.

Types Of Upholstery Fabric

There are two main categories of Upholstery fabrics: natural and synthetic. Choosing the correct one can improve the lifespan of your furniture. Let's explore the various types.

Natural Fabrics

Natural upholstery fabrics come from naturally occurring fibres, such as plant seeds, animal coats, stems, leaves, and minerals. They are a favourite for people more concerned about softness rather than performance.

Some popular natural upholstery fabrics include:

  • Silk

Silk usually comes with a premium price tag, but the upholstery fabric is gorgeous. People tend to use silk fabric in barely used, formal, or unique living rooms. One downside to silk is that you’ll need to clean it professionally if something stains the furniture or furnishing.

  • Cotton

Cotton is the most used and cheapest natural fabric. Cotton has a soft feel, and it's comfortable, stable, durable, and resistant to fading. But it’s susceptible to stains, holds dust and dirt.

  • Wool

Wool is durable and super-resistant to pilling and staining. That makes it an excellent option for high-traffic areas or rooms. The only drawback of wool is the odour it emits when wet.

  • Leather

Leather is the most durable fabric for upholstery. It's excellent for high traffic spaces, very comfortable, and most ideal for people that own pets. It's pretty easy to remove stains and vacuum hair out of leather furniture.

  • Linen

This fabric wrinkles and stains easily, so it’s not ideal for rooms that expect child traffic. Linen can also shrink when you wash it. To avoid damaging or shrinking the fabric, it’s best to clean linen professionally.

Synthetic Fabrics

Synthetic upholstery fabrics are highly durable and easy to clean. These fabrics are also cheaper to manufacture than natural fabrics. They are made by synthesizing chemicals or natural products to create synthetic fibres.

Some popular synthetic fabrics include:

  • Polyester

Polyester is the most produced and often used with other fibres. For example, manufacturers blend Polyester with cotton for wrinkle protection. Polyester also retains dyes. It used to come highly recommended for outdoor upholstery.

  • Nylon

Nylon is another fibre that’s often combined with others. Combined with other fibres, Nylon can eliminate napping and crushing in chenille and velvet fabrics. However, Nylon fades in high sunlight and is susceptible to pilling.

  • Polypropylene or Olefin

Polypropylene is a superb choice for upholstery fabric and the second most-produced synthetic fibre. That’s because it produces less waste by weight compared to others. Additionally, it’s easy to clean (no need for protective stain treatments), bleach safe, and durable, making it ideal if you or your client have pets or children. The one disadvantage of this fabric is that oil bonds with Olefin. In other words, oil-based stains are challenging or impossible to remove. The material can also break down when extreme heat is applied (e.g., scorching iron).

  • Acrylic

This fabric is imitation wool. It was the original go-to fibre for outdoor upholstery fabrics because of washing ease – you can hose down and dry acrylic quickly. Acrylic is also fade resistant. And while it won’t soil and wrinkle easily, lower quality acrylic fabrics can pill.

  • Rayon

Rayon is among the most versatile fabrics around. It has the remarkable ability to shape-shift in terms of imitating other materials. Rayon can mimic the properties of cotton, silk, wool, and linen. It’s solid and durable, but susceptible to wrinkling.
