Say "GOOD NIGHT" to Bright Rooms.

Brighter mornings and sunlit evenings are a bonus in the summer, but can impact our sleep schedules when it’s time for that “back-to-school” routine.  A simple and effective trick that parents can use to improve sleep habits is to make each bedroom in the home a dark, quiet, and relaxing space for their children.

City living can sometimes present a challenge when it comes to this – with street-lights and headlights leaking into the room and projecting onto the walls.

Black-out window treatments are an easy solution that minimizes the light that filters through your windows!

In this article, we’re sharing 3 reasons why you should consider blackout window treatments for your child’s bedroom:

1.    Better sleep!

Room-darkening shades, (“blackout shades”) typically use an opaque material like PVC or Mylar to line the fabrics used. They are designed to fit tightly to your window casing – drastically reducing light. To reduce the “halo effect” that sometimes occurs when light sneaks in through the outer edges, we recommend pairing your blackout shades with lined curtains which can block up to 99% of outside light.

This not only makes the room darker but can help reduce heat which creates a cooler sleep-friendly environment that increases quality of sleep for everyone.

2.    Physical Health-The immune system is critical to overall health. It is fundamental to healing wounds, warding off infections, and protecting against chronic and life-threatening illnesses. One of the best ways to increase children’s immunity is to ensure they are getting adequate sleep.

3.     Mental Health-After a long day of learning, children need sleep to restore resources that were used during the day. A well-rested brain has the ability to solve problems, learn new information and enjoy the day. Over time, insufficient sleep impacts how a child feels, behaves, and interacts. Over time lack of sleep can lead to more serious mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

Your child’s circadian rhythm (also called their “body clock”) is a 24-hour cycle that tells your child’s body when to sleep. The body clock is influenced by your child’s age; children require less sleep as they get older. Health Canada recommends the following guidelines:

· 9–11 hours of sleep/night for children ages 5–13 years old, and

· 8–10 hours of sleep/night for children 14–17 years old.

Invest in blackout window shades and improve your child’s physical and mental health with a dark, quiet space for them to recharge.
