Personalize Any Space with The Right Wallpaper

Pull any room together by adding some personality to it. Wallpaper is an excellent way of adding a focal point to any room and attracting guests' attention. Choose from a vast selection of wallpapers through Sonata Design, no matter the space or need. We associate with the best wallpaper suppliers and service Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Kelowna, and surrounding areas.

The Perfect Combination of Paint and Patterns

In general, people either love or hate wallpaper or murals. But throughout our twenty-five-year history, we’ve come to believe wallpapers can work for anyone if properly chosen and installed with the proper steps. We’ve inspired thousands to think differently about applying wallpaper through continuous innovation, creativity, and craftsmanship. So rest assured, we’ll help you get the perfect combination of paint and wallpaper patterns you desire.

A Layer of Style That’s Incomparable

Wallpaper is a great way to celebrate you or your client's personality and make any room feel special. It can streamline your entire aesthetic, bringing about the look you want. Here are some reasons why many homeowners, interior designers, and contractors apply wallpaper.

Wallpaper Lasts Longer in Most Cases

Get better durability. Paint can chip, peel from moisture, or become damaged from accidental cases. Whereas, wallpaper handles most situations well, giving it greater longevity than paint. After putting up good quality wallpaper, occupants rarely have to refinish their walls for many years.

More Intricacy and Style

Make a statement; select your wallpaper from a massive variety of styles. The sheer number of options available makes wallpaper the choice if you care about freedom of expression. You can find more intricate designs that would otherwise be a challenge to create using paint. There are lots of choices for crafting your desired feel and style – from liner to printed to vinyl and everything in between. And if you can’t find something you love, we can help customize or create wallpaper that’s perfect for your office or home décor needs.

Uniqueness

Be unique. It’s common to find the same colour (or colour combinations) used across painted walls in a neighbourhood. That’s because people usually pick the same neutral colours for walls. This tendency tends to make every room look and feel the same. But with wallpaper, you get a more unique, customized look – making it rare that you would find another place nearby with the same colours and designs. For a truly unique environment, consider mixing wallpaper with some exotic paint colours.

Unconventional Spaces Become Magnificent Rooms

Got a closet, powder room, or something else that needs a little love? Maybe there’s an area in your house or commercial environment that you dislike. Whatever the case, wallpaper can turn an unconventional or oddly-shaped room into something stunning. It has a way of making a space appear and feel less boring.

Remove With Ease, Anytime

Modern wallpaper products are different from those that wrapped the walls of our grandparents’ homes. The solutions used to paste them on walls (and take them off) have changed a lot. Today, you can remove many modern wallpapers by simply peeling them off. Others may require standard tools but are not complicated to remove.

Low Maintenance and Durability

The outer side of most modern wallpapers is vinyl, making them highly durable and easy to clean, unlike the papers of times past. Modern wallpapers are also less likely to scratch, tear or stain. We’re confident that the inclusion of wallpaper will go a long way towards creating the personal, beautiful look and feel you want, no matter how subtle.

An Impressive Asset to Your Room’s Appearance

Although some have forgotten the intrigue and drama that wallpapers can create, it remains one of the most impressive ways to change a room's appearance. From botanical to geometric designs, the modern styles available can be both subtle and striking. We offer a large selection that can make that feature wall in the home or office a topic of conversation – or introduce some design cred that wows guests.

Transitioning To Wallpaper: Are You Ready?

There are two common misconceptions about wallpaper that prevent people from elevating their home or commercial space. Some mistakenly assume wallpaper is out of fashion, and others think it’s a lot of maintenance. But these ideas are far from the truth. Wallpaper is very much in style and always will be. Wallpapers allow us to embrace the colours, patterns, and imagery observed in our everyday life. The right art can evoke pleasant memories and moods. However, transitioning from painted walls to wallpaper is a big step. Here are some considerations.

  • Size First

The size of your room or space is everything because it determines the scale of the wallpaper. Typically, smaller rooms work best with smaller patterns. On the other hand, larger areas look and feel better with large patterns. Anything besides the aforementioned will most likely come off awkward. For example, small prints are too small of a pattern in large rooms, making it somewhat annoying and fussy. Similarly, large prints in a small room can overpower the space.

  • Double-check Your Choice

Wallpaper is a beautiful art form, but depending on how you install yours, it can be challenging to remove or replace later. So once you identify something you love, it’s a good practice to test it out. Consider ordering a memo cut sample of wallpaper first. Then, pin that paper to your wall for a few days to make sure you absolutely love the way it looks. If you still like the wallpaper after a couple of days, then it’s the one for you. Additionally, you can request wallpaper books from us – they contain fairly sized samples of wall coverings that you can use to test certain wallpaper styles you intend to purchase.

  • It Isn’t Just About the Feature Wall

Don’t limit yourself to the idea of a feature wall or only wallpapering one side of your four-sided room. Wallpaper can work well when used on all sides of the wall, producing the impactful, finished look desired. Besides, the notion of a ‘feature wall’ is relatively outdated. So feel free to wallpaper an entire room if necessary. Plus, you'll always have guidance on such matters with the Sonata Design team.

What Are You Waiting For? Get In Touch Today!

Colour and pattern are visually instantaneous, producing a sense of style and personality that can impact how we feel. That's why many love wallpaper, and many more are embracing it. We seek to define ourselves and our environments, and there’s no better way to introduce unique attributes than wallpaper. It’s great for almost any project; bedrooms, bathrooms, stairs, kitchens, and others.

Types Of Wallpaper: The Common Selection

There are various types of wallpaper, and choosing the right one can be challenging. To help you navigate the world of wallpaper, here are some common wallpaper types.

  • Non-Woven

The non-woven wallpaper is becoming a popular choice for homeowners. This kind of wallpaper is much more breathable, which eliminates the issue of mildew and mould. These wallpapers are made from synthetic and natural fibres, making them tear-resistant. It’s also easy to wash and apply via the “paste-the-wall” technique. That means the wallpaper hanger or installer can spread the paste directly onto the wall – then apply the wallpaper to the wet wall surface. This is not only half's decorating time, but also makes the wallpaper simple to peel off in one piece.

  • Vinyl Wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is perfect if you have high traffic areas or want to paste wallpaper in specific rooms like the bathroom or kitchen. This type of wallpaper has a printed vinyl film on top of the paper layer. It’s resistant to water and vapour, and you can clean it with ease. Vinyl wallpaper is great for bathrooms and kitchens, as it’s an excellent and cheaper alternative to tiling.

  • Flock Wallpaper

Flock wallpaper is one of the oldest in existence. The inventor created it to imitate early 17th century cut velvet hangings. And today, it still has a place in interior design. The 3D qualities of flock wallpaper can add interest and dimension to any room. If you’ve ever seen one, then you probably know how hard it is not to reach out and touch it. Further, this kind of wallpaper is a good sound absorber. Consider flock wallpaper if you’re looking for a luxury feel.

  • Anaglypta Wallpaper

Anaglypta is probably the oldest wallpaper brand. Invented by Thomas J Palmer in 1887, it was the first wallpaper where designs could be physically pressed onto the paper – creating a versatile paintable firm surface. It was also the first washable and durable wallcovering with serious decorative qualities. Anaglypta is typically printed with ornately textured raised designs, allowing it to add debt, pattern, and warmth to rooms.

  • Grasscloth

If you aren’t keen on a specific pattern or colour, Grasscloth wallpaper might be the perfect way to add interest. Grasscloth is made from natural materials, making it eco-friendly – but it doesn’t sacrifice style or quality. The textured, rugged surface adds a tactile element to walls, producing a nice visual edge. Consider this kind of wallpaper for areas with low traffic and little moisture, such as an office space.

  • Liner Wallpaper

Liner is also known as lining wallpaper. It’s typically made from paper or fibreglass and is effective for minimizing repairs and hiding wall defects. Professional wallpaper hangers will sometimes use liner wallpaper as a base for other, more delicate wallpapers (e.g., designer wallpapers). This wallpaper is one of the easiest to apply and remove.

  • Foil Wallpaper

Foil wallpaper is the most varied, exciting and dramatic range of wall coverings you can find on the market. It’s made from thin metallic foil and comes in various plain colours or surface-painted patterns. This wallpaper can give your interior space a shiny metallic effect. However, they are one of the most difficult to hang successfully. Plus, because foil is highly reflective, this wallpaper highlights wall defects – not great if you want them hidden.

  • Mylar Wallpaper

This type of wallpaper has a printed paper base with polyester film on top, making it washable. Its appearance is shiny and wet, somewhat similar to foil wallpaper. Professional installers usually use paper lining before pasting Mylar wallpaper. That's because, like foil, Mylar can highlight wall defects. Further care is also necessary for the installation process, as this type of wall covering creases easily. People commonly use Mylar wallpaper for kitchens and bathrooms.

  • Natural Bamboo Wallpaper

The natural bamboo wallpaper will add a distinctive look to any home or commercial space. These wallpapers derive from bamboo reeds or vines printed onto a paper backing. The colour and texture of the wallpaper slightly vary from roll to roll, much like natural bamboo. Further, as natural wallpaper, it has sound absorption and heat insulation properties. Consider this wallpaper if you want a panelling look.

Properly Caring for Your Wall coverings

Most people don’t understand what a wallpaper sign or symbol means. But it's essential to know how to interpret them, so you can properly care for your wall coverings. Wallpaper signs indicate various methods of safe cleaning. If any of the following symbols aren't present on your wallpaper, the safest bet is to avoid cleaning it.

  • SPONGEABLE

You can lightly clean it using a sponge.

  • WASHABLE

The wallpaper is relatively durable. You can gently clean it without causing damage, though it’s still vulnerable to water.

  • EXTRA WASHABLE

It’s durable enough to clean rigorously without causing damage.

  • SCRUBBABLE

You can scrub it clean without incurring noticeable damage.

  • GOOD LIGHT FASTNESS

This symbol indicates that the wallpaper will not bleach easily. It’s durable enough to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight.

  • MODERN LIGHT FASTNESS

The wallpaper is somewhat resistant to bleaching. It will bleach much faster than wallpapers marked as “Good Light Fastness.”

  • ADHESIVE TO WALLCOVERING

This means you must apply the adhesive on the wallcovering, not the wall.

  • READY PASTED

The adhesive is already applied to the wallcovering or wallpaper.

  • STRIPPABLE

If you see this symbol, it means both the top and back layers of the wallcovering will come off in the event of redecoration.

  • WET REMOVEABLE

You must apply warm soapy water or a liquid wallpaper stripper to remove this wallpaper.

  • PEEL-ABLE

This one indicates the top layer of the wallcovering will peel off if you decide to redecorate.

  • OFFSET MATCH

Indicates the vertical offset of a pattern.

  • STRAIGHT MATCH

Indicates the beginning of each time, a vertical pattern repeats on the wallcovering.

  • FREE MATCH

The wallcovering has no repeating pattern match, and you can hang it in any direction to achieve the desired look.

  • DIRECTION OF HANGING

This symbol is a guide regarding the direction in which you should hang the wallcovering.

  • REVERSE ALTERNATE LAYOUT

You must hang the wallpaper in alternate directions to achieve the final look desired.
