Let’s talk about Upholstery!

Upholstery is a fabulous way to get creative and produce a perfect, unique piece for your home, or freshen up some of your old favourite pieces into something brand new! When it comes to upholstery, there’s a huge variety of things we can do with the styles and fabrics! Let us walk you through some of your options!

Upholstery can be used for a wide variety of projects, including:

  • Custom bedding

  • Custom pillows

  • Custom sofas

  • Custom chairs

  • Boxed valances

  • Custom roman shades

  • Custom Roller Shades

  • Recover a piece that you love

Now let’s talk about some questions you may have about upholstery and how to start the process.

How do I start?

The first thing to do is to choose a piece. If you are recovering furniture, select the piece you want to revamp, such as a chair, a pillow, or a sofa. Then, decide a fabric that is appropriate for the specific type of project.  You can select a bright colour to make a statement and tie the room together, or pick something more neutral that will match the style of the room.

How do I pick a fabric for my project?

The type of fabric will depend on the piece you are working with.

If you are selecting to upholster furniture that will experience daily use and constant wear, it is important to pick a fabric type that is very durable. Durability is measured in double rubs (DR) and this number can be found on the back of upholstery fabric samples. A low use area can be done with 40,000 DR, whereas an item that needs to withstand high traffic should be approximately 200,000 DR. Some popular options are: velvet, chenille, faux leather, faux suede and wool blends.

However, if you are choosing a piece to upholster that will be more decorative than for daily use, you can choose fabrics that are less durable but make for a stunning piece. Some popular options include silk, faux silk and linen.

You can then DIY your own upholstery project or bring it over to us and our qualified professionals can work their magic for you!

At Sonata Design, we can take on any of these projects and more! Basically, we can do anything that you can imagine. Contact our team if you would like to hear more about your future projects with upholstery!
