This spring, let’s talk about cleaning our blinds!
Now that it is officially spring, and you’re thinking about spring-cleaning, don't forget to clean your blinds! But what is the best way to clean your blind without damaging them? We’re here to help! The first thing we need to do is find out what style of blinds you’ve got, to know the right way to clean them safely!
Let’s talk about different types of blinds and the best way to clean them!
Manufactured Vinyl/Plastic shades-Vinyl rollers are the easiest style of blinds to clean, as they can withstand the harshest cleaning products. To clean these, simply wipe them down with a cloth dipped in bottled chemical cleaners (spot cleaners) and soapy water!
Slat style blinds-For these, you can use a duster, a vacuum, or a cloth dipped in vinegar and water mixture to wipe them down slat by slat! However, don’t use a Swiffer to dust them, as this leaves an oily film that dust can stick to.
Wood blinds/shutters - For these, use a soft cloth with some furniture polish. Avoid using water or harsh solutions as these can damage, scratch, or warp your blinds.
Honeycomb or Sheer blinds- For these, you can use a duster or a vacuum (on low setting) for the exterior, but avoid chemical-based cleaners, and remember to be gentle. For the pockets, we recommend using a telescopic pole with a sticky end, or you can use a blow-dryer to push the dust out one end of the blind. In cases where this isn’t enough, you can use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or small bugs!
Vinyl roller shades- You can identify if your roller shades are vinyl by touch or smell. They will feel smooth and slick to the touch, and they may also smell like plastic. These can be easily clean with a clean microfiber cloth dipped in warm soapy water. You can use mild dish soap for this!
Fabric roller shades- These types of roller shades feel like they are woven, rather than plastic. These cannot be cleaned with water as it may damage the mechanisms and fabric. To clean these, you can dust them, or use a vacuum with a brush attachment to very carefully get rid of any dust.
